I have read some things about people who self-harm and cut themselves, and I get it's like for a distraction from emotional pain, but a few times recently I have thought something probably totally stupid, but maybe in a similar sense....

so, I could probably never commit cutting myself cuz of my fear of pain (even though with some certain kinds of pain that are good, like say the pain in one's mouth at a dentist/orthodontist, I tend to try to deal with) but serious pain from such as cutting -- I just wouldn't be able to actually do so -- however I've almost thought of doing so once... not that it would happen since I also can't tolerate seeing blood in real life.... but only cuz I've felt the need to. I'm not quite sure if its cuz of some stressful emotional reason or what?

there might have been times I felt frustrated over something and wanted to feel the pain (I'd just be too afraid to actually feel pain, but I could almost imagine it) but my main question -- is there maybe some method for dealing with such emotions that could be similar to cutting (but not actually feeling that kind of pain and such)? like a non-"self-inflicting" sort of release of emotions? nothing like meditation or clearing my mind, I feel like I would need to do something...

I'd almost think something like drawing or writing (since I'm an animator/illustrator and used to write a lot of fake stories and poems) but my creative juices aren't as strong as they were years ago and often don't draw or write creatively as much anymore -- so its a little frustrating cuz I never know what to draw/write nowadays. so idk if those would be an option or would just be pointless. :\ but you could tell I do a lot with my hands...

(sry if I dont make sense I am a bit confused myself about all of this..)

Doing things that take your mind off the source of these emotions could offer a positive distraction. Personally, I have a plethora of outlets. I draw, write music, journal, and blog for the times when I need a creative outlet. Cleaning, repairing broken things, and sewing offer a constructive outlet. And, of course, exercise (running, climbing, parkour) offers a physical outlet. You don't necessarily have to be good at any of those things for them to be outlets, either, so don't limit your options based on your abilities or talents in different areas.

Sometimes showers are good or going to get a massage helps.

Video games or simply taking your mind off of the issue really helps listening to happy music.

Eating.

Cuddling with a pet.

Drawing, marking yourself with a marker, snap a rubber band on your wrist, get piercings or tattoos, get to a happy place lol sit down on a chair with your feet on the floor and tap your knees back and forth.... Doesn't work for me but my therapist said it helps. If it's cold outside go for a walk, cuddle with an animal or even get one you can't cuddle with.

some of those are interesting~ hah I actually decided to get 2nd ear piercings just last Dec (I think) and I've been stressing out days until it happened about how it would feel, and I finally get them done and I dont even think I flinched but it didn't feel like much at all! I mean my ears sort of feel warm/stung for a long while, but I handled it well, surprisingly.... so I probably got the "get piercings" part done! (lol unless I wanted more?)

true there could be marking myself with a marker...I've probably used a ballpoint pen on my hands once before :\

but I like some of those options.....

I like hashy's responce. Some of those are interesting indeed. I'm gonna use the rubber band one myself :3.

I tend to get nervous and a bit anxious. Specially during
School, like in the halls with the "crowd".
