Saw a thread on /b/, the question intrigued me. What is the game that has disappointed you the most, whether it be failing to live up to your expectations/its own hype, being a letdown sequel to a fantastic debut, or just by being shockingly poor?

Personally, I feel every Guitar Hero after 2 could have been a lot better than what they were; song choice and gameplay were poorer, the 'higher-level' songs devolved into mad button-mashing rather than a test of reaction and 'skill', and the games got a lot less awesome in terms of guitars, characters, and animations - gone were the days of playing as the Grim Ripper with a bone scythe for a guitar, sucking the souls out of the audience whenever you activated star power.

Similarly, I have regretted spending money on every edition of CoD since CoD4, and I outright refused to pay for Black Ops and MW3. I've only played BO because my brother got it. I have not yet had the misfortune of experiencing MW3.

I also feel Dark Souls could have been far better. Demon's Souls was punishing, but enjoyable. Dark Souls was punishing, but I didn't find as much fun in it and I did in its predecessor.

And retroactively, Fallout 3 - I adored it when I got it, I adored it when I played it, and even now when I boot it up, I still adore the world and its characters. However, now that I've played New Vegas, the only thought I can conjure in any Fallout 3 session is: 'New Vegas is better.'

Miscellaneous games include Mirror's Edge, AC2.5/2.75 (Brotherhood and Revelations), Battlefield3, and Shadows of the Colossus.

Go.

I thought Dark Souls surpassed Demon's Souls in nearly every way. I thought Bioshock was hugely overrated and overall disappointing. Dragon Age 2 was a giant letdown. Final Fantasy has consistently degraded into a pattern of letting me down more and more with every release, XIII being a disgrace to the series (I have yet to play XIII-2).

FFVII let me down when Sephiroth turned out to be chump change. Team Fortress 2 let me down when PSN got hacked to shit. Team Fortress 2 for PC let me down when patches ruined it and made it completely hax.

Homefront. And F.E.A.R. The whole damn series.

On the flip side, Vanquish is hugely underrated and overall awesome.

Also, am I the only person in existence who actually liked the Black Ops campaign? I like the MW3 one so far too.

Sonic Unleashed. I reckon that it just kept reapeting itself too much with going to save the game, and pressing the wrong buttin is pretty easy to do like what I did by accident and it erased my whole database and the graphics could of been a little better aswell.

WoW: The Burning Crusade & Wrath of the Lich King
Mass Effect 3, and I haven't even played it.
Everything post COD4
Dragon Age 2 blew massively. Especially with no hot Hawk Cawk on Hawk incest. Although Merrill is the best character so far.
Fable 2-3 we're major letdowns
Skyrim was a bit of a letdown, despite being a solid game.
The entire Assassin's Creed series

Probably more, but I can't remember now that I'm fuming over BC and WotLK

I played a game for the PS1 back a while ago called Martian Gothic. It was a pretty good game, you had to do a lot of puzzle solving to get through the game, as well as fight off non-dead foes that resembled the undead, but they just didn't die permanently. Anyway, you play hours and hours of the game over the weeks, it takes a while to complete it, if you don't know exactly what to do at each turn. Which I didn't, so it took a good month or two to complete, there was a tonne of audio-diary entries as well as written entries on a computer telling you the story of what happened on this space station in Mars (where you are now). The storyline is really complex if you want it to be.

The disappointment was the ending. You enter a room after all three people you play as are cured of an affliction (long story, basically the three people you play can't be in the same room at the same time or the bacteria inside them morphs them together, which is the end of the game, unless you find the cure). In the room is the way out of the space station, and home to Earth. You need to rush around the room and hit a lever, opening the shuttle bay or something, before the 30 second timer ends. Once you hit the lever, the rocket flies off and into the distance, then the game ends. Pissed me off, you go through a huge kerfuffle to get to the end and the ending cutscene is a 5 second long rocket flying off into the distance. Did the black guy (the guy you use to pull the lever) survive?? Did the others?? Where did the rocket go?? NO IDEA. Not even credits, just takes you back to the welcome screen and you can load it whenever you want to do the last bit again and get disappointed. FFFF

Fable 2-3. I really loved the first one.
Mass Effect 3.
COD: Black Ops.
Final Fantasy XIII. I have a feeling I won't bother with XIII-2.
Every Legend Of Zelda game after Majora's Mask.
Pokemon after Silver, Gold and Crystal.

Mass Effect 3 is the obvious choice, but not for the obvious reasons, I actually understand and appreciate how it ended, I just think they could have included a lot more content and that we didn't get to have a face off with Harbinger was a huge let down to me, story wise it has it's faults, but also I don't think any ending would have been satisfying to the audience as the one they individually imagined.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution was also a disappointment, by the end of the game, I was left feeling as if I'd achieved nothing, don't get me wrong the story and mechanics were great, but I never found any of it particularly challenging or as endlessly inventive as the stuff in Deus Ex, both 2 and HR never managed to quite get the joy of finding the hidden MJ12 Bunker under NYC in just the 3rd mission, making an already sprawling level absolutely humongous in comparison.

Front Mission Evolved: Is it really so hard to make a mech game these days? they all seem so mediocre, Since Mechwarrior 3 they just haven't felt right at all, you never truly feel like you're piloting a behemothic bi-pedal tank or a nimble anime Mecha, something just seems... lacking.

I can agree with Deus Ex actually. I had a ton of fun at first but eventually it got stale and I felt like I wasn't being rewarded at all for being a stealth badass and I was actually just wasting a shitload more time. Then the fucking worst endings imaginable. Who the fuck came up with that idea? "Hey guys let's make an ending generator machine...but LITERALLY. You push a button to decide your ending"

More importantly, how anti-climatic is it that

Yes the second best one I agree but it was a not nearly as good as San Andreas, still a really good game.

It's actually one of the best games of the series.

If it wasn't related to GTA, it be a graet game and is still good but it just came off as a game that took itself WAY too seriously.
I played it waiting for Nico to become some russian mobster who controlled his own empire and what I got was Nico being a henchman all the time with the missions being repetitive chase this guy and kill him.
Saints row the third was far more fun even if there's so much silliness in it. At least I could drive tanks, fly planes and cause mayhem.
GTA just felt so much more restricted because they went for a serious story mode trying to make it gritty.

Probably Skyrim or the Witcher II of late... though at least the Witcher II did have a lot of good elements to it, alas some of the flaws just bugged me too much to keep at it, therefore I'll go with Skyrim.

The most recent game to disappoint me is probably the new Zelda on the Wii; Skyward Sword. For me it focus' way too much on the motion controls and I happen to suck at any game with excessive use of motion controls. In the end it just frustrated me.
