Kelly and I (users no longer active thought it would be an idea to create a guide on all things sex. We're taking a few sections each, so as not to lose much detail- it may be slightly NSFW in parts. None of the information is copy pasted unless otherwise stated.

If anyone has any questions or suggestions, feel free to ask myself, Kelly or Occasional Desire, or post them here.

STDs

Sexually Transmitted Diseases or Infections are illnesses transmitted through humans or animals through sexual contact- this includes oral sex, anal sex and vaginal intercourse- more on those later. Certain STIs can also be transmitted via IV drug needles, childbirth or breastfeeding. There are numerous types of STI.

These are some of the most common STIs.

AIDS

Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome is a disease effecting the human immune system, caused by HIV. HIV can be transmitted by bodily fluids, such as blood, semen or breast milk. It is now a pandemic. AIDS can be transmitted through blood transfusions, as well as via sex, needles or childbirth. There are treatments available that can slow the progression of the disease, but we currently have no cure or vaccine.

There are multiple symptoms to AIDS, as well as damaged immune systems. These may include the following:

-Fevers, night sweats, swollen glands, chills, weight loss.
-Retinitis [an eye disease].
-Meningitis, which effects the brain.
-Tuberculosis and pneumonia, effecting the lungs.
-Tumors.
-Chronic diarrhea.

Chlamydia

Chlamydia is a bacterial infection. It is one of the most common STIs worldwide, and as well as being transmitted by sex, it can also be passed on from mother to child in childbirth. Chlamydia can be easily treated with antibiotics, but if left untreated can permanently damage the reproductive systems. There are few distinguishable symptoms for Chlamydia, although it is connected to the following:

-Cervicitis [infection of the neck of the womb].
-Urethritis [infection of the urethra].
-Chlamydia conjunctivitis, which may cause blindness.
-Reactive arthritis.
-Swollen lymph nodes in groin.

Crabs

Crab lice are parasites. They may also live in hair and eyelashes, and they feed on blood. Humans and gorillas are the only hosts of this parasite. As well as via sex, they may be transmitted through towels, clothing and bedding. Symptoms are few- itching and the visible lice are the main ones.

Crabs may be treated by removal by forceps, cutting the infected hair, permethrin cream rinse and certain shampoos.

Genital Warts

Genital warts are exactly as in the name- warts on the genitals. They are highly contagious, and are spread via sex. They often appear in clusters, and can increase risk of cervical cancer in women.

There is a vaccine available to prevent genital warts, and they may be treated by numerous types of medicine and surgery.

Gonorrhea

Gonorrhea is another bacterial STD. It can be caused by sharing toilets/ bathrooms as well as via sex. It is treated by numerous drugs, mainly antibiotics, although there is no vaccine yet as far as I'm aware.

The symptoms of Gonorrhea may include the following:

-Lower abdomen pain.
-Fever.
-Pain during sex.
-Nausea.
-Discharge [normally yellowish].

Herpes

Herpes is a viral disease. Oral Herpes are generally called Cold Sores, effecting the mouth and lips. Genital Herpes is spread via sex. There is no cure or vaccination for Herpes- once infected, it is in the body for life. There are numerous types of Herpes, with some of the symptoms being the following:

-Clusters of inflamed papules on the outer surface of genitals, resembling cold sores.
-Skin ulceration.
-Meningitis.
-Weakened immune system.
-Alzheimer's disease.
-Bell's palsy [facial paralysis.]

Syphilis

Syphilis is a bacterial infection, transmitted through sex. It can be treated with antibiotics and penicillin, although I am not aware of a vaccine. If left untreated, it can effect the bones, eyes, brain and heart. Some symptoms of Syphilis are:

-Rash.
-Swollen lymph nodes.
-Fever, sore throat, weight loss.
-Meningitis.
-Arthritis.
-Joint problems.

Viral Hepatitis

There are numerous types of Hepatitis, spread in numerous ways. Hepatitis is liver inflammation due to a viral infection. GB virus C and Hepatitis A and B are transmitted via sex. There isn't a vaccine for Hepatitis. Sometimes it can be curable, sometimes it can be chronic.

For further information on Hepatitis, click here

It is important to get yourself and your partner regularly tested for STDs if you are having sexual intercourse. Visit your GP or family planning clinic for this.

Sex toys.

A sex toy is an object used for human sexual pleasure. They're often designed to resemble human genitals, but they come in numerous forms.

Here are some types of sex toy.

Dildos

Basically, a dildo is a rubber/ pvc/ silicone/ glass penis shaped toy, although they can come in different sizes.
They can be used for vaginal and anal penetration. You can also get double ended dildos, for mutual penetration.

Straps ons

Strap ons are dildos which may be strapped on, often used in lesbian sex. They come with a harness. Lubrication is often used to ease insertion.

Vibrators

Vibrators are vibrating devices, often dildo shaped. There are penetrative vibrators, often designed to mimic human penis size, anal vibrators for anal insertion, g-spot vibrators which are often small enough to fit on a finger, vibrator wands which are mainly used for clit stimulation and rabbit vibrators, which can come in numerous forms.

Cock Rings

Cock rings are used to prolong male ejaculation. This can help with Erectile Dysfunction and other problems, and some models have a clitoral stimulator.

Nipple toys

Nipple toys are normally nipple clamps which stimulate the nipples with variable pressure, and suction devices- generally made of glass or rubber, they make the nipples more sensitive . Some have heat or a pump to create suction.

Butt Plugs

Butt plugs are shorter dildos for anal insertion. They often have a base to prevent them getting lodged. They're usually covered with a condom to prevent STD.

Ben Wa Balls

Ben Wa Balls are hollow metal balls that can be inserted into the vagina or anus. They contain a small weight which rolls around.

Next I'll be talkin about periods (:

Different terms for periods:
-Blob
-Rag
-Ovary Pompeii
-Crimson River
-Exploding Ovaries
-Red Wave
-Tom [time of month]
-Cherry Koolaid
-The Curse
-Aunt Flo

In my own words, what a period is:
Tiny cells that get fertilized as eggs when you are pregnant get released from your body, through your vajj obv, in form of blood.

In medical terms, what your period is:
"Menstruation is the shedding of the uterine lining (endometrium). It occurs on a regular basis in reproductive-age females of certain mammal species. Overt menstruation (where there is bleeding from the vagina) is found primarily in humans and close evolutionary relatives such as chimpanzees.[1] The females of other placental mammal species have estrous cycles, in which the endometrium is reabsorbed by the animal (covert menstruation) at the end of its reproductive cycle. Many zoologists regard this as different from a "true" menstrual cycle."
http://en.wikipedia....ki/Menstruation

Now that we've got the basics covered, let me expand your vocabulary a bit further:

Tampon: A blob of cotton or rayon (or a mixture of the two) inserted into a vagina to absorb blood.

Padettes (aka Pads): Disposable wads of treated rayon/cotton blend fleece that are placed within the inner labia to absorb menstrual flow.

Disposable menstrual cups: A firm, flexible cup-shaped device worn inside the vagina to catch menstrual flow. Disposable cups are made of soft plastic.

Sea Sponges: Natural sponges, worn internally like a tampon to absorb menstrual flow.

Draw Sheet: large reusable piece of cloth, most often used at night, placed between legs to absorb menstrual flow. Many people use towels or blankets as draw sheets.

Sanitary napkins/towels (and pads): Somewhat rectangular pieces of material worn in the underwear to absorb menstrual flow, often with "wings," pieces that fold around the undergarment and/or an adhesive backing to hold the pad in place. Disposable pads may contain wood pulp or gel products, usually with a plastic lining and bleached. Some sanitary napkins, particularly older styles, are held in place by a belt-like apparatus, instead of adhesive or wings.

Reusable cloth pads: are made of cotton (often organic), terrycloth, or flannel, and may be handsewn (from material or reused old clothes and towels) or store bought.

Types of sex

Foreplay

Foreplay can refer to numerous things. Kissing, intimate conversation, holding a long gaze, holding hands, biting, stroking someone's arm, whispering in the ear, touching someone's face/ pushing hair from face and massage can all be classed as foreplay. There is also tongue kissing, groping, stripping, and as it progresses, digital stimulation or fingering [which is stimulation with the fingers]. Fingering can also be classed as mutual masturbation.

Oral

Oral sex is stimulation of the genitals by the tongue, lips and mouth. Cunnalingus/ eating out refers to oral sex on a woman, Fellatio/ a blowjob is oral sex on a man.

Anal

Anal sex is usually when the penis is inserted into the anus. Although a little natural lubricant is produced, it's generally best to use other lubricant. Women can use a strap on to anally penetrate men. Anal sex is mainly assosiated with homosexual males. Anal sex stimules the prostate, or the male G-spot.

Vaginal

Vaginal intercourse involves the insertion of the erect penis into the vagina. This may also refer to digital penetration, when fingers are used to penetrate the vagina instead. Once the finger(s)/ penis is inserted into the vagina, one or both partners move their hips to move it backwards and forwards, creating friction.

BDSM

BDSM includes Bondage, Discipline, Domination, Submission, Sadism and Masochism. It's a form of roleplaying. Items such as whips, chains, handcuffs, tape, paddles, spreader bars and collars are often used in this kind of sex. The common roles are of Tops and Bottoms- the top 'giving' and the bottom 'recieving'. Biting, spanking and slapping are often practised in BDSM.

Circumcision next (:

Circumcision: The removal of the foreskin of the penis. It is widely practiced and ussualy performed during adolescence for cultural and religious reasons.

Advantages of being circumsized:
-It makes it notably easier to clean your penis.
-It prevents you from getting penile cancer.
-It reduces the chances of getting STI's.

Disadvantages of being circumsized:
-Circumcision is very painful and many view it as cruel and believe it is unnecessary to circumcise children.
-There is always surgical risks to consider, such as excessive bleeding and infections (they are uncommon, but possible).
-When the foreskin is removed, thousands of nerve endings are also severed. This decreases sensitivity in the penis, which may make sex slightly less pleasurable.

More terms, mainly legal stuff.

Bestiality/ Zoophilia

Zoophilia is sex between humans and animals. In most countries, this practise is illegal and classed as animal cruelty. It's also frowned upon by some religions.

Prostitution

Prositution is the act of having sex with someone for money or goods. In poverty stricken areas, this is not uncommon. STDs are easily spread through this.

Age of Consent

The age a person can legally engage in sexual activity. This can differ for homosexual sex, heterosexual sex, anal sex and oral sex.

Sexting

Sexting is sending sexually explicit messages or photographs through a cell phone. In some places it's against the law.

Adultery

Adultery is sex between a married person and someone who is not their spouse. In some countries it's classed as a crime.

Rape

Rape is sexual assault. It's mainly sexual intercourse/ touching without the other person's consent, or an underage person. It isn't just females who are raped, males can be sexually assaulted as well. It often leaves the victim traumatised.

Incest

Incest refers to sexual activity between close relations, such as the immediate family. It's illegal in some countries. Sometimes this can be classed as child abuse. Inbreeding is also illegal in most countries, and increases the risk of birth defects.

Homosexuality and genetics

I thought this would be interesting to add into the guide.

Scientists are currently studying the link between homosexuality and the genetics.

Links have been found between the amount of X chromosomes in the brain, and the genetic make up of the mother. Brain structure has also been found to relate to homosexuality. Lesbians and straight men have been found to have larger left brain hemispheres, whereas gay men and straight women have been found to have larger right brain hemispheres.

Research has identified several biological factors contributing to sexual orientation- genes, prenatal hormones and brain structure.

Glossary of Terms

Full credit goes to Objet Trouve for this.

Some of these may have been mentioned before.

asexual- A person who is not sexually attracted to either gender.

bisexual
– A person emotionally, romantically, sexually and relationally attracted to both men and women, though not necessarily simultaneously; a bisexual person may not be equally attracted to both sexes, and the degree of attraction may vary as sexual identity develops over time.

coming out – The process in which a person first acknowledges, accepts and appreciates his or her sexual orientation or gender identity and begins to share that with others.

gay – A word describing a man or a woman who is emotionally, romantically, sexually and relationally attracted to members of the same sex.

gender expression
– How a person behaves, appears or presents him- or herself with regard to societal expectations of gender.

gender identity – The gender role that a person claims for his or her self — which may or may not align with his or her physical gender.

genderqueer – A word people use to describe their own nonstandard gender identity, or by those who do not conform to traditional gender norms.

GLBT – An acronym for “gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender.”

homophobia – The fear and hatred of or discomfort with people who love and are sexually attracted to members of the same sex.

internalized homophobia (or “Quiet” homophobia) – Self-identification of societal stereotypes by a GLBT person, causing them to dislike and resent their sexual orientation or gender identity.

lesbian – A woman who is emotionally, romantically, sexually and relationally attracted to other women.

living openly – A state in which GLBT people are open with others about being GLBT how and when they choose to be.

outing – Exposing someone’s sexual orientation or gender identity as being gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender to others, usually without their permission; in essence “outing” them from the closet.

pansexual- A person [sexually, romantically, emotionally and relationally] attracted to people regardless of gender identity or sex.

queer – A term that is inclusive of people who are not heterosexual. For many GLBT people, the word has a negative connotation; however, many younger GLBT people are comfortable using it.

sexual orientation – An enduring emotional, romantic, sexual and relational attraction to another person; may be a same-sex orientation, opposite-sex orientation or bisexual orientation.

sexual preference – What a person likes or prefers to do sexually; a conscious recognition or choice not to be confused with sexual orientation.

straight - A word describing a man or a woman who is emotionally, romantically, sexually and relationally attracted to members of the opposite sex.

straight supporter/ally – A person who supports and honors sexual diversity, acts accordingly to challenge homophobic remarks and behaviors and explores and understands these forms of bias within him- or herself.

transgender – A term describing a broad range of people who experience and/or express their gender differently from what most people expect. It is an umbrella term that includes people who are transsexual, cross-dressers or otherwise gender non-conforming.

transphobia
– the fear and hatred of, or discomfort with, people whose gender identity or gender expression do not conform to cultural gender norms.

transsexual – A medical term describing people whose gender and sex do not line up, and who often seek medical treatment to bring their body and gender identity into alignment. The term FtM is used for female to male transition/ transgender, and MtF is for the male to female variant.

Pregnancy

Pregnancy, as you're probably aware, is when a female carries one or more offspring in the uterus. Childbirth usually occurs about 38 weeks from conception. Pregnancy occurs when a sperm cell successfully fertilises an egg cell. The developing offspring is called a fetus [or foetus]- this shows stages of development-

The fetus is connected to the mother via an organ called the placenta. It allows the fetus to be provided with food and oxygen, and for waste to be disposed of via the mother's kidneys. The placenta develops from the same egg and sperm cells forming the fetus.

During childbirth, the mother experiences regular contractions in her uterus, which should eventually push the baby out. Although most vaginal births are successful, some choose to or have to have a caesarean section- an operation in which incisions are made in the mother's abdomen and uterus to deliver the baby. The amount of pain in childbirth tends to depend on how relaxed the mother is, and her pain tolerance.

Noticable changes during pregnancy may include:

-The missed period [start of pregnancy].
-Morning sickness.
-Weight gain.
-Food cravings.
-Mood swings.
-Poor posture.
-Back pains.
-Breasts increasing in size.
-Increased need to urinate.

Alcohol should be consumed in minimum during pregnancy, as should cigarettes and drugs- these can potentially harm the child.

Miscarriage is when the fetus is incapable of surviving, and dies. An Abortion is the removal of the fetus from the uterus, also causing its death.

Artificial Sperm

At the moment, humans cannot reproduce asexually, nor as genetic same sex parents. However, artificial sperm has been recently developed by scientists, which may enable this in the future. If you want to know more on this, check these links:
http://www.emo-corne...showtopic=36420
http://news.bbc.co.u...lth/5154026.stm
http://www.dailymail...stem-cells.html

IVF

For infertile or same sex couples, there is also a procedure avalible called IVF. IVF is abbreviated form of In Vitro Fertilisation.
It's a process in which female egg cells are fertilized by male sperm cells outside of the womb. This normally costs money, although on services such as the NHS in some places it may be granted for free.

Surrogacy

Surrogacy is where a woman agrees to have a child for an agreed couple/ parent. She may be the genetic mother of the child, or she may be implanted with the embyro. This may be good for male gay couples or single parents. Sometimes [especially if the surrogate mother is a friend or relative], surrogacy is free, although sometimes it costs money.

Transgender

Transgender is a gender identity, when a person's self identity doesn't match up with their assigned [physical] sex. It overlaps with multiple terms. Transgender people can be any sexual orientation.

Transvestites

Also known as Cross Dressing, Transvestitism is the practice of wearing the opposite sex's clothing. Cross Dressers may not want to change gender, or medically change their bodies.

Drag Kings and Queens

The term Drag applies to wearing the opposite sex's clothing/ adopting their mannerisms mainly for entertainment purpose. The term Drag Queen applies to males performing female drag, and the term Drag King is vice versa. Faux Queens are women doing female drag.

Genderqueer

Genderqueer is when an individual may identify as male and female, neither gender or a third gender. This is sometimes likened to Androgyny, although the terms have differences and are not equivalent of one another. Some genderqueer people regard their gender as being fluid, varying from time to time. They may wish to go by their assigned sex's pronouns, the opposite sex's pronouns or gender neutral pronouns.

Androgyne

An Androgyne is a person who does not fit entirely into the gender roles of society. They may identify as being between genders, of fluid gender, neither gender or beyond gender. Androgyny can be either physical or psychological.

Transsexual

Transsexual people indentify as [and may wish to live as] the opposite sex. Many trans people go under transitioning surgery, so they may be their true sex. After transition, they may not identify as transsexual or transgender any longer- simply as man or woman.

The term Transman applies to female to male [FtM] transsexuals, and Transwoman applies to male to female [MtF].

Transitioning is sometimes known as Sex reassignment therapy. This may include hormone replacement therapy, which causes some of the characteristics of the desired sex- it cannot reverse some of the existing characteristics such as breasts on women and facial hair on men, but this may cause fat and muscle distribution changes, breast growth in transwomen and facial hair growth on transmen.

Mastectomies may be performed on transmen [binding the chest can be risky], and breast augmentation for transwomen.
Sex reassignment surgery is the surgery performed to allign a transsexual's physical gender with their gender identity. This normally includes reassignment of the genitals. Not all transsexuals go under this surgery, although still live in their preferred gender role.

I have an addition to the period part.
biggrin.gif

*TSS
*half periods
*Maybe PMT
*Maybe that bit where your periods stop I can't remember what its called but I know its something really stupid and obvious.
And maybe advice that people should make a note on a calender of when their periods start, especially when you first start.
This way you can see if your periods are settling into a regular cycle which can help to predict what day to wear a pad and prevent underwear damage and also can spot a problem or pregnancy.

Fantastic, well put together and easy to read guide, should hopefully answer a lot of questions particularly for those who are a little more shy about seeking advice.

Thankyou Jess. :3

Good ideas, Jo. :]

I'll ask Kelly if she'd like to write it later.

I'm sure I linked somewhere to Jess' contraceptive guide. If it's not, I'll edit it in.

I skimmed through a bit. I think a bit about helping to determine your sexuality, how to come out about it and how to accept it would be useful for people. I'd write it up myself, but I've gotten some negative PMs from people because of my straight orientation, trying to help people with GLBT problems.
