A Game That Is No Fun...

Go now... go play it, this is one of those landmark moments in gaming where the paradigm shifts so violently everyone else can not keep up. I would love to discuss it more, but doing so would be a massive spoiler, all I'll say is, it's no fun, for all the right reasons.
If you have played it, feel free to discuss it here, if not, go away and play it.

A game that is absolutely no fun to play, but you need to play it; Spec Ops: The Line.

Its not as gayly realistic as Operation Flashpoint is it?

I specifically said "Gameplay is nothing special, but that's not important.""Gameplay isn't most important" -.-
By that I meant that it's nothing unique, nothing we haven't seen before; cover-based shooter, bullets go where you point them (Yes, I'm looking at you, CoD) and people die when you pull the trigger. You don't play a game like Spec Ops: The Line, a 5 hour slaughter-fest and descent into madness, for its gameplay unless you have a hardon for the reality of violence. You play this game for its story, and by God, if you don't get the point the first time, go back and dedicate 5 hours to finishing the campaign again.
Though if you really want to fool yourself into believing that the game is all glory and wonderful, then I guess you can try its multiplayer. Again, cover-based shooting, bullets go where you point them, and people die when you pull the trigger. The only issue you'll have is that people have ridiculously high ranks and have already unlocked a fair share of better equipment. Though thankfully, the game has the battlefield approach, where every gun you use kills equally as effective as the first, it's just a matter of how it's handling works for you. Even the things that you know should have never been in the game in the first place *cough*proximity mines*cough* are unlocked at level 8 or so.
But really, the campaign is like one of those "Mandatory Viewing" things, in fact it helps the crusade against cookie-cutter modern shooters by showing you that your actions beget consequences.

There is actually a school of thought that says the gameplay was designed intentionally to be something from 2006 to add to the players sense of disconnect."Gameplay isn't most important" -.-
But yeah, my advice when playing, forget the fourth wall exists at all.

I'm about halfway through spec ops and I don't see the big fuss still. I guess the story is kinda cool but the controls are clunky, aiming can be hit and miss and gameplay is repetitive.
Enemy AI is also pretty retarded as well.
I hope it gets better but so far, it's pretty boring. I rarely play any of the generic cookie cutter shooters modern shooters anyway. Most of them are far too slow.
Great gameplay can make up for mediocre story but great story can't make up for mediocre gameplay.

I had the same issue with the controls, but like any other game I used my brainpower to adapt. Shit, I'm just glad that they broke up the functions of "Sprint" and "Go into cover" between tapping the A (or X) button and holding it. AI is pretty dumb, yeah, but I mostly encounter that issue with friendlies. Enemies do just about what you'd expect them to do: shoot, and often times charge so that your best laid plans get a good dicking before you have time to react.
Yes, it's a cookie cutter Gears of War style shooter, but if you're letting that stop you from learning something from Spec Ops then you're cheating yourself.

Yeah because that's what games are designed to do. Ensure you have a good time.Sounds like a lot of people are playing this game for the wrong reasons, which is someone Yahtzee foresaw when reviewing the game--that the moral of the story is just going to be lost upon by the casual players who are just trying to have a good time with the game.

Call me a "casual" gamer because I rather have a mediocre story with great gameplay than the opposite.
I can barely remember the full story of half-life but I remember it for its awesome gameplay and action.
The things spec ops teaches you can get just from reading about it or watching movies.

Surely that depends on your stance on the whole games as art argument?Yeah because that's what games are designed to do. Ensure you have a good time.
As Hyena once said, you wouldn't call the best horror games "fun" now would you?
Ain't sayin' you're wrong, just sayin' it depends what you want out of a game.

I love gaming and if people think otherwise, that's really their problem.
My main issue with the game is that it's extremely mediocre. It's a typical GOTW cover based shooter with clunky controls and awkward aiming.
The story can be amazing but that doesn't make it a good game. I would rate it honestly as a 6/10.
It's like watching a movie with a complete shit story but because the actors put on a great job, you can't give it a zero because it would be unfair.
I guess I was supposed to learn some amazing life lessons from it but because of my "casualness", I can't comprehend such things.
I'll be honest, even if the game taught the meaning of life but was extremely tedious to play through, I still rate it 6 or 7 out of 10 and say they might as well made it a book or movie.
