So we like having new members, right? Well it doesn't seem like they always feel all so very welcomed. Because quite frankly m'dears we aren't the most welcoming and warm bunch. We can come off as quite cold and closed off. But we know, that everyone goes through feeling shut out and unwanted on this site at one point. We all go through it and if we post and get involved with the site the more the members warm up. We need and like [despite not showing it at times] our new members, because if it weren't for them we'd have no chance at more intelligent, entertaining and lovable members and we need the new faces as much as we need mine, yours and anyone else's.

This place is supposed to feel safe and comfortable. A place where members feel welcome to share, be themselves and actively post what they have to say without fear of immediately being shut down/out/up just because another member disagrees, for any reason. But we aren't always like that, we can come of cold, harsh, uncaring and dangerous.

So to make the new members know their not alone, and we've all been there post what is was like when you first joined and how you worked yourself into a cozy member spot where people know, talk, respect and hopefully like you.
Include things like:
  • What was your attitude towards the site when you first joined?
  • What was the attitude of the site in general?
  • Did people pick on you for something you did? Or just because you were new?
  • How you were treated by the already established members on the site?
  • How did you get involved in the site?
  • Who were the first members to welcome you?
  • How well known do you think you are now?
  • Is there anything you did as a newbie that you'd advise others not to?
  • As well as other details you think new members might be able to relate to.

You don't have to have such and such amount of posts, you don't have to be such and such EC famous, you just have to feel welcome to post on our forums. I'd like to hear from you, because hopefully it may encourage at least one newbie to stick around.

I am so glad you posted this topic XD

When I first joined, I was pretty much lost. I didn't (and still haven't) read "Newbies start here" section. I didn't introduce myself either.

I believe I was picked on for being new. The things that I posted that were picked on, I saw absolutely nothing wrong with. And now that I've been here for awhile and am familiar with the established members, I can say something stupid as fuck and everyone laugh instead of telling me "fuck off, newb" lol.

Nobody welcomed me. Probably because I didn't introduce myself >.<
Unless you consider Kane yelling obsenities at you to be a welcome :]

My advice to newbs: Don't take anything seriously. It's nothing personal. Keep logging in and posting and you'll feel welcome after a bit.

What was your attitude towards the site when you first joined?
I thought this place was amusing and that my brother was an idiot for joining.

•What was the attitude of the site in general?
It was chaos I think when I joined. Lots of debates going on, and you could say just about anything.

Did people pick on you for something you did? Or just because you were new?
No one really picked on me. I think that's because I wasn't a shy newb. If anything, I picked on others. tongue.gif I was bitchy.

How you were treated by the already established members on the site?
At the time they appeared to have this sort of little 'clique'. If you weren't in, you weren't cool. And you didn't know jack shit.
That could be just the way I saw things, and probably is.
I was treated all right. No one really insulted me.

•How did you get involved in the site?
I joined to meet someone.
Stayed because I met different people that I rather enjoy. And hey, I've got no life.

•Who were the first members to welcome you?
Err. Wendy, POEFAN, and Grrr. or whatever her display name is. She goes by Mysti. I think I have her phone number. O.o Wendy's too..

How well known do you think you are now?
I have no idea. People know my name, but only because it's almost always been in my display name.

Is there anything you did as a newbie that you'd advise others not to?
Get in bitch fights with your brother's ex who is on this site.
Drama happened. And it wasn't pretty.

•As well as other details you think new members might be able to relate to.
I have no idea.
Type properly, use your head, don't be a complete attention whore.

  • What was your attitude towards the site when you first joined?
I was enthusiastic at first and decent. Yet then I left for about three months or so, and after that I came back with a shitload of annoying smileys.

  • What was the attitude of the site in general?
At first it seemed like a very closed circle. But then it loosened up to me as I started to meet people.

  • Did people pick on you for something you did? Or just because you were new?
    Not that I can recall.

  • How you were treated by the already established members on the site?
I'm guessing I was neglected since I was a newb.

  • How did you get involved in the site?
I didn't when I joined because I left immediately. But then I started to post in the Games forum, meeting some people there and when I thought I was ready for the Hangout, I started posting there which pretty much got me involved.

  • Who were the first members to welcome you?
Hmm... I can't remember but I do think Objectivity. was surprisingly one of my first friends here.

  • How well known do you think you are now?
Well, people know my name. According to Jess imma popular kid. :3 So I guess somewhat well-known.

  • Is there anything you did as a newbie that you'd advise others not to?
DO NOT USE EXCESS SMILEYS NOR THE WORD "lol" TEN-BILLION TIMES EACH POST, PLEASE.
  • As well as other details you think new members might be able to relate to.
Basically don't take anything serious here, it's just the internet. Keep up your posting for some recognition and type properly. That'll do.

* What was your attitude towards the site when you first joined?
Apathy mixed with mild disdain. When I first showed up, I did so basically as a lark just to see what emo kids talk about. And just as suspected, there was a lot of general whining. But to my surprise, a large population here at EC are actually not emo at all. It's partially why I stayed.

* What was the attitude of the site in general?
There was a clear cultural clash where a large number of the members are actually not at all emo, with the majority of the newbies being far more... sensitive to criticism. The result was that a lot of the newbies who ARE emo come on here, gets repulsed by some of the responses they get from the non-emo members, and leave (some of them my own, I believe)

* Did people pick on you for something you did? Or just because you were new?
Nope. I actually felt quite warmly welcomed by people here.

* How you were treated by the already established members on the site?
Senti was probably the first to really warm up to me quickly. But most of the members were actually pretty nice to me from the get go.

* How did you get involved in the site?
I forget. But I think it had something to do with me just getting bored and typing in "emo forum" on google one day. The rest was history.

* Who were the first members to welcome you?
Senti and Objet, I believe.

* How well known do you think you are now?
I don't actually post THAT much on here, so while I'm a fixture here, I'm pretty sure there are only a few members who are really familiar with me.

* Is there anything you did as a newbie that you'd advise others not to?
nah. when I first showed up, all I did was just make irreverent jokes and that's really about it.

* As well as other details you think new members might be able to relate to.
My personal advice for newbies is to lurk the relevant forums you're interested in first. A lot of the topics that I see created are generally created elsewhere first. It also helps that your first post is not "oh I'm so tortured".

Pretty Lame Duckish.

I pretty quickly professed to getting "throat-fucked" by one/all of the moderators.

Hmmm. Make emo kids cry. Troll people. Egg people to kill themselves

* What was the attitude of the site in general?
EMO IS THE WAY OF LIFE!!!!!!!!!

* Did people pick on you for something you did? Or just because you were new?
No. I did get suspended because people complained about me. How can people pick on you when you're here to troll?

* How you were treated by the already established members on the site?
Established members? There were none actually. If there were, I ignored them just as I do now.

* How did you get involved in the site?
I said it. To troll

* Who were the first members to welcome you?
No one did.

* How well known do you think you are now?
I wouldn't know. Don't ask me.

If I advise them to act like a rational person and not idiotic to be popular, no one will listen so why bother?

What was your attitude towards the site when you first joined?
When I joined last year in march, I thought that it seemed like a friendly forum but I think if I was to join now, I am pretty sure I wouldn't stick around here for that long.

What was the attitude of the site in general?
Friendly and welcoming I guess

Did people pick on you for something you did? Or just because you were new?
No..I think I pretty much fitted in straight away.

How you were treated by the already established members on the site?
There was hardly any established members back then but all the members were alot more welcoming and nicer then some of todays established members.

How did you get involved in the site?
Well I found this site by typing in emo haircuts because I was looking at different hair cuts at the time then I joined and then I started posting in a game (the first kiss, marry, hug, push off a cliff game) for abit then I started expanding the places I posted in I guess.

Who were the first members to welcome you?
I am pretty sure Sophie (Occasional_Desire) was the first person who I spoke to on here and we became pretty good friends but now times have changed between her and I.
I am pretty sure there were a couple of others but I can't remember who they were.

How well known do you think you are now?
I guess I am pretty well known around here. Though I think I was more well known last year then I am now but meh its happened to quite afew members that are still on here.

Is there anything you did as a newbie that you'd advise others not to?
No not really

As well as other details you think new members might be able to relate to.
Try not to take things seriously on here.

Try to involve yourself in alot of the forums. (So instead of posting in just 2 or 4 forums try to most in more the then 7 because thats how people will start to get to know you more.)

One thing that alot of members get annoyed with is spelling so try to make sure your spelling isn't that bad. The simply spelling mistake is fine I do it all the time but abbreviating words/sortening and TyPiNg LyK dIs just don't do it.

If you have a disagreement with an established member (lets say they are dissing your favourite band and saying their shit) try not to start an argument with them. Because the argument will grow and grow and considering most people jump on the bandwagon and be on the established members side you most likely will end up looking bad. So try not to start arguments.

Other then those things just try to have a good time here and also just be yourself. Also there is no need to suck up to people just to be accepted.

What was your attitude towards the site when you first joined?
I honestly didn't really care about it all that much about it. I came on most days but I didn't lurk, I didn't really try figure out who was popular. Of course you tend to notice at some stage who is posting a lot but that's pretty much it.

I actually did not have a CLUE who the moderators were or what they did. That changed when Rellik made an appreciation thread but by then I'd been on EC a few months.

What was the attitude of the site in general?
There was a lot of true emos. A lot of trolling. Of course at the time me being the internet oblivious person that I am, I didn't know what a troll was. I found out quickly enough of course.

Did people pick on you for something you did? Or just because you were new?

Ha, I actually cannot believe I'm linking to this thread. Stupid thread I made
People didn't pick on me. The thread was made to take the piss and see if anyone would believe us. I was not really picked on because I didn't make stupid threads. I was pretty reluctant to start a new thread and that stood by me - I didn't have 10000 idiotic stupid threads trying to fit in.

How you were treated by the already established members on the site?
For a long time I was not well known or popular. Even when I was modded, I was pretty "unestablished". Most people didn't know who I was, I didn't have 6000 posts or twice as many friends. Most people were nice to me though.

How did you get involved in the site?
I posted a lot in the "help" areas of the site - help and advice, broken hearts. Probably stood by me when I was later to be appointed in charge of those sections. I didn't post that much per day, only five or less posts a day.

Who were the first members to welcome you?
Actually, noone really welcomed me. Niks was nice to me when I posted in her hot or not thread I believe. One of the first people to talk to me off of EC was actually Rellik, and given that we started talking in December and I joined in June, I think it's fairly obvious I spent a lot of time floating about.

How well known do you think you are now?
Pretty well known, my name IS on the forum mainpage underneath the sections, I post a lot in the help sections still and the hangout. Most established members all know each other by now. The newer members are getting to know me too. Well liked? Well I don't know. That's a different question happy.gif

Is there anything you did as a newbie that you'd advise others not to?
Don't make stupid threads saying you're marrying Rellik. Or if you're going to, let me know so I can have some laughs.

As well as other details you think new members might be able to relate to.
If you don't understand what people are talking about, ask them if you like. You'll figure it ALL out soon enough though. EC isn't exactly metaphysics, it's for fun so just kick back and enjoy it. Don't feel you need to have a million posts before you can talk to anyone. Don't be afraid to report something if you think it's against the rules, or to PM a mod if you're feeling a bit lost and don't know what to do.

You're possibly wondering why you may often hear others say "The people on EC are great" and you think "they're horrible to me!". The thing is, once you get into the swing of things, people will accept and like you. Don't try to be this hugely crazy person, a charicature of yourself. Just be who you are. There's no need to suck up to the popular ones, they change nightly anyway.

An interesting place, quite fun and sligtly melodramatic. Back when I joined anyways.

- What was the attitude of the site in general?
It was all 'Omgg! I is soo emoo!' but it was funny.

- Did people pick on you for something you did? Or just because you were new?
I don't think so. I kept to myself really.

They were nice.

I were doing an Art Project, and my teacher told me to google and research what I was doing. So there you go.

Not very, I don't like to be noticed to be frank.

Be yourself, don't suck up, use correct grammar and spelling because everyone likes to be picky and bitch about the smallest things. And remember it's the only internet.

* What was your attitude towards the site when you first joined?
I'm a regular at a forum that thought it might be fun to raid an emo forum. I came late to the raid, but joined EC to see what all the fuss was about re: the attempted raid. I thought EC would be a bunch of whiny emo kids suffering from pseudo depression.

* What was the attitude of the site in general?
Sometimes as wolves moving in for the kill. With the occasional white knight grandstanding for the ladies. Several of the members seem pretty normal, though. I was surprised when so many aren't the stereotypical emo.

* Did people pick on you for something you did? Or just because you were new?
No, not really. I pretty much lay low and try not to post too much stupid shit.

* How you were treated by the already established members on the site?
Kane was posturing about the forums, and we traded words... something about him stating that he's "better than everyone else" irritated me.

* How did you get involved in the site?
Through a forum raid

* Who were the first members to welcome you?
Toni was modding the newbie section, and had to deal with us.... The George Boner newbie thread should have remained, even after the newbie forum was cleaned up. Erin and Brett were also pretty nice.

* How well known do you think you are now?
Not very well. I average 2 posts a day.

* Is there anything you did as a newbie that you'd advise others not to?
There are a lot of inside jokes, so don't jump to conclusions.

* As well as other details you think new members might be able to relate to.
Hang in there. If you have something to say, say it... just don't be a dumbass. Use proper grammar, and develope a thick skin.

What was your attitude towards the site when you first joined?
I used to think it was really cool.

What was the attitude of the site in general?
When first joined, the site was fairly new. Everyone was very nice [and very n00bish], myself included.

Did people pick on you for something you did? Or just because you were new?
Not when I first joined. But when I stopped coming, and then came back months later, a lot had changed. I didn't know and still assumed that everyone was as friendly as they had been before. My bad.

How you were treated by the already established members on the site?
No one noticed me. No one does now either. XD

How did you get involved in the site?
When I was in 7th grade, some kids were calling me emo, so I searched the term to find out what it meant, and came across this site.

Who were the first members to welcome you?
I wasn't welcomed by anyone.

How well known do you think you are now?
Maybe one or two people know of my existence, but not much more than that.

Is there anything you did as a newbie that you'd advise others not to?
Don't assume that the internet is a nice place. lol
And don't act like a whiney bitch.
Also, don't pick out the most depressing name you can think of. If your name includes emo, depressed, suicide [or anything close] you will be flamed.

As well as other details you think new members might be able to relate to.
If you aren't well known, you won't be treated with as much respect, or none at all.
And when you post in the Hot or Not section, don't throw a fit if you get a few negitive responses. If you didn't want to hear opinions, you shouldn't have asked.

What was your attitude towards the site when you first joined?
I don't know

What was the attitude of the site in general?
Lots of trolling

Did people pick on you for something you did? Or just because you were new?
Picked on me because I AM new, because my favorite band is Green Day and I have them in my sig.

How you were treated by the already established members on the site?
I don't think I've ever actually communicated with any established member. I shy away from instances like that.

How did you get involved in the site?
I used to think being emo was "in". Eventually I stopped caring about that.

Who were the first members to welcome you?
bring.me.back.to.life was nice to me in the Games section.
Other than her there was just other new members, like HateLovesCandy and Deserai_Fallen_INeedAHug, in the Games section with me.

How well known do you think you are now?
I'm not.

Is there anything you did as a newbie that you'd advise others not to?
To not type like a fucking retard. Learn spelling and proper grammar

As well as other details you think new members might be able to relate to.

•What was your attitude towards the site when you first joined?
"Meh. Could be fun. We'll see."

•What was the attitude of the site in general?
Seemed a bit like it is now, except we have even more douches.

•Did people pick on you for something you did? Or just because you were new?
I started a three page argument with some of the..*ahem* 'established' members within my first week, but it was fun, many lulz were had (on my part) and I don't think I've changed for the better since. Not that I'd want to.

•How you were treated by the already established members on the site?
See above. Figure it out.

•How did you get involved in the site?
Checked out the Games Section - how else is one to boost their post count? Then had the argument, RP's for a while, eventually stopped and now I troll.

•Who were the first members to welcome you?
God knows. Top of my head? Toni was alright. Algernon I liked for his intelligence. But I'm not even sure Algernon was here when I joined, so I may be thinking of later. Meh.

•How well known do you think you are now?
Heehee. You tell me.

•Is there anything you did as a newbie that you'd advise others not to?
Start massive arguments with 'established' members who have legions of brown-nosed followers to back them up. Unless you're like me, and, ya'know, into that kind of thing.

•As well as other details you think new members might be able to relate to.
If you're a troll, go for it. If you're not, you've got three options: Speak your mind, in which case you'll be wrong. 'Conform' to 'randomness', in which case you'll be flamed. Or lick everyone's arse, in which case you'll be hated. Good luck!

* What was your attitude towards the site when you first joined?
Didn't know what to expect. Wasn't too knowledgeable about forums at the time.

* What was the attitude of the site in general?

Possibly more chaotic/ emo than it is now.

* Did people pick on you for something you did? Or just because you were new?
I wasn't picked on.

* How you were treated by the already established members on the site?
Didn't communicate with them much at first. Got a little better after a while.

* How did you get involved in the site?
Starting out I posted mainly in Poetry. Stuck around, posted more in different sections, helped people, still here.

* Who were the first members to welcome you?
I think it was Newt who first welcomed me to the site.

* How well known do you think you are now?

I'm not fully sure. People know my name, I post quite a bit. Not sure about how well 'liked', but I'd say I was fairly well known on here.

* Is there anything you did as a newbie that you'd advise others not to?

Text talk and using emoticons. Bit hard to believe, but hey, I was a newb. Moronic typing is not good, guys.

* As well as other details you think new members might be able to relate to.

Stick around. It's not as bad as it may seem in first impression. Once you know your way around, it'll be a bit easier.
