A potentially fun thread. Some of the replies on another forum I occasionally use to steal threads for EC, just cos some of them cracked me up and to maybe get the ball rolling cos we know what you fucks are like :P

I did physics, and when it was revealed it often got a sort of "impressed" response, which I think shows how misunderstood it is by many.

When I tell people I do Geology I get one of these:

1. "Isn't that the study of rocks ? What can you do with that"?
2. "Oh, like what Ross does on Friends"?
3. "...Geology Rocks"!
4. "Oh! Oh! I know about Geology! Sedimentary, Igneous and Metamorphic"!

The only difference between you and me is I don't find it funny when I hear it because i've heard it all so many times i've lost count. What's worse is there's not good replies to them.

1. Well quite a lot actually, since the study of rocks is the study of earth resources I can get into the oil industry, groundwater industry or even the mineral exploitation industry which....(by this point they just have a blank expression on their face and no longer care).

2. Not really, Ross specializes in palaentology (at which point they interupt with "Oh like Dinosaurs"?!). Then I have to reply with "Well, we don't really do much on dinosaurs, it's more microfossils like trilobites, graptolites and bivalves, or studying the past climate in order to create models so that....(by this point, they have lost interest).

3. ....Did it ever occur to you that i'd have heard that joke loads of times before so won't find it funny now ?

4. There's more to it than that, but I really can't be bothered to explain it.

Annoyingly I can no longer just use the "it's the study of earthquakes, volcanoes, fossils and oil" excuse as when I start the masters in engineering geology it's not something that can be summed up in a single sentence.
So far all I have prepared is "..It's basically just like Civil Engineering", and if they don't know what that is, i'll just point them to the nearest Google search engine.

I study psychology and almost laugh to myself before mentioning this, simply because I know full well that they will respond by saying something along the lines of; "Oooh, don't figure me out!", "better watch what I say around you then, eh!"

I think the best reply I got after saying I was going to do pharmacy was...

"What? You're going to work on a farm?!"

When I tell people I'm unemployed and am studying nothing at the moment, I get blank stares and "So... what would you like to do then?".

One day, I'll be able to say I'm studying film and I work part time at a bar/shop/restaurant/test subject.

One day...

I study Film and Media, and I get this a lot;

'You want to be a director and make films?'
'Oh! So you'll be an actor! Don't forget me when you're famous ;) '
'Wow, so you'll be making blockbusters soon, eh?'
'That's a stupid course, you won't get far with that.'
'So you're an artist?'
'That's pointless, all you do is watch films all day I bet.'

It gets old real quick. And they're always mocking and patronising, mainly it's the science/psychology/math students, not all though ofc, but a lot of people are snobby and presumptious when they hear of what I to study. They think it's pointless. They also try and get into arguments about films, and how classic cinema is 'shit, and has nothing on new stuff.' :/

It amuses me because my course is theoretical, based on the psychology, politics and history surrounding cinema. I don't bother defending myself any more, I used to explain what I actually study but now, just ignore people.

I dry clean. I get lots of undeserved pity from people who assume I'm not doing it by choice. I get a reaction of envy from some people when they realize how laid back my job actually is.

Apparently saying that you get paid to kill babies doesn't go so hot with most civilians. Otherwise they laugh.

"Culinary arts."

Responses:
"What's that?"..."a chef"
"Oh, you wanna work at Olive Garden?" (Oh how insulting)
"Oh you wanna be like those people on Food Network!?"
"*gasp* It's a tough job, I've seen Top Chef."
"That's cool, I wanna be _______" (dickhead)

Women see me doing my job and think I'm a genius, men say it's "rare" but don't give a shit either way.

I once said "I'm in charge of the company infastructure this week, looking after the network, servers, etc" and the bitch replied "What's a server?".

That reminds me, everybody and their brother always asks what "infantry" means.

Before this, I definitely believed that word was common knowledge.

That's odd, here I thought ob/gyn's were well respected.

When I tell people im studying at university but I haven't decided on a career yet I get a lot of people asking me how I decide on what courses I wanna take.
I tell them that I mainly take courses that all fall in the humanities, so english, history, philosophy and I am most likely going to choose english as my major.
then people tell me I wont get far with a degree in english.
so I tell them that if I go with english ill be using it as a stepping stone for law school.

People tend to comment about what your studying without actually knowing the opportunities available in that field which I find annoying.

When I tell people I'm unemployed and am studying nothing at the moment, I get blank stares and "So... what would you like to do then?".

Something along these lines.

It usually gets pretty awkward and I always feel like they think I'm some lazy sack of shit. But I'm looking for work and if I had the money to be getting an education, I would be.

My mum gets a lot of really funny reactions. She's an addictions counselor. My favourite reaction is when people IMMEDIATELY begin to justify their drinking to her.

Yeah, I assume they're thinking that. It doesn't get me down though because I know I'm doing a hell of a lot to look for a job, so it's not like their assumptions are true or anything.
