Fred is a seagull.

I think I figured it out, it took me about 2 minutes of re-reading the last sentence and I came up with this:

If you just add a simple comma, it becomes more obvious what he's asking the chef - Fred replies with,"What if I shoot the seagull, myself, and pay you £500 for you to make it into soup, would you?"

He's saying what if he shoots the seagull, then himself, would the chef then make that into a soup. Punctuation saves lives, but sometimes it ends them?

Edit: Put it in spoiler tags, in case anyone else wants to attempt it (assuming I'm right of course)
