Is self mutilation an emo issue or a personal choice? I am held to my opinion that depression and self mutilation are personal choices.

self mutalation is a personal choice. but "emo" is stereotypically paired with self harm because must people who call themselves "emo" typically self harm which is why it is associated with the label emo...but I don't think this goes in the hangout.

It's a personal issue. "Emo" is a stereotypical subculture that is associated with self harming. But not all people who are "emo" self harm

One would have to be capable of "Being emo" for self-mutilation to be an "Emo" issue.

Self-mutilation would come under a medical condition - for example a severe case of depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder etc... and not directly from a sub-culture, however the emo style, clothing, so-called music and hair all hint towards someone quite insecure in themselves, which is also a common trait among people with conditions such as depression, anxiety or bipolar disorder. It's hardly surprising that plenty of insecure people fall into the emo style and again hardly surprising that people with insecurities may have larger problems which caused it, but that doesn't mean emo people self-harm in general, it just means that those prone to self-harming may be more attracted to the style.
I don't know if I'd call it 'personal choice' either though, as sometimes people do feel driven towards it but I suppose that depends on the willpower of the person in question.

Depression is NOT a choice. Nobody chooses to suffer from depression. That's like saying someone chooses to be gay, it just doesn't work that way.
Emo is just a fad. It has nothing to do with anything. If someone self-harms, regardless of whether they do it because they think they're "emo" or not, they have serious issues and need professional help.
This thread makes no sense. If you self harm or think you might be suffering from depression, talk about it with someone you trust and arrange to see a doctor as soon as possible. Locked.
