You can make friends by introducing yourself in the Newbie section or even contributing to the masses of threads elsewhere.

Just join in the conversation and you'll get there eventually.

In addition to what OD said, if you want to become known and make friends you do have to post. Noone is going to know who you are if you've only ever posted twice, you know? There's hundreds of users, but most with over, say, 500 posts will be known on the forum. Some will become known with less posts, some still won't if they only stick to one area of the forum, but as a general rule.
