Hey guys. I was wondering what your thought were of early screamo? I'm talking here 90s bands like I Hate Myself, Saetia, and Pg. 99? Do you like it?
Personally I like some of it but I only listen to so much before it just starts to sound like a wall of noise.

I don't really get the "wall of noise" thing anymore. I think screamo is definitely an acquired taste. For me it was, at least.

Yeah, but the early stuff if so much more chaotic and intense than today's screamo. It sounds more like grindcore then anything else.

I am pretty sure that is classified in a different genre and not just as "screamo".

^ Saetia and Pg.99 are probably the two bands along with Orchid that people use to define early 'screamo' with I Hate Myself being more emotive hardcore than screamo.
A lot of the earlier wall of noise bands are also described as emoviolence (powerviolence + emotive hardcore)
Personally, I prefer the newer, more mellow stuff over the 90's. That being said, there's always a time for some balls to the wall scramz.

I'm not that much of a fan of the early screamo stuff. I like the screamo that is littered with post rock influences. Something like Pianos Become The Teeth.

Screaming/Growling/whatever vocals were definitely an acquired taste for me. I slowly worked into them though and now I can safely say I love a good Bloodbath song.I don't really get the "wall of noise" thing anymore. I think screamo is definitely an acquired taste. For me it was, at least.

Actually, now that I think about it, the earlier stuff isn't quite as balls to the wall as I used to think it was now I've listened to more from the genre.

The first time I listened to Orchid I was convinced I had somehow downloaded a 16kbps album or something. Too raw for my delicate, inexperienced ears.
Still don't much like Orchid, actually. Pg.99, Saetia, Swing Kids and a few others are all great, though.

Need some Jerome's Dreams, Joshua Fit For Battle, and Neil Perry.
Indian Summer would be your more "mellow" screamo.
