WE FOUND A PARTICLE CONSISTENT WITH THE HIGGS BOSON!

OUR VERY UNDERSTANDING OF THE UNIVERSE IS ABOUT TO BE EXPANDED BEYOND ALL EXPECTATIONS OF OUR LIFE TIME!

WHY IS THIS NOT BEING DISCUSSED?!?!?!

CERN press release.

Obviously hyperbole on my part, but still, this is an AMAZING! discovery.

Ah, I can remember doing physics in school when they were only beginning all of this stuff in CERN. I don't understand it properly, but I think it was a very exciting day to be a physicist, especially for Professor Higgs himself, I saw him on the news and he was very emotional about it, understandably.

what I find more interesting is what kind of future discoveries will they make, based on what they know now. Again, a great time to be a scientist.

The final missing piece of the equation for The Standard Model of particle physics! Well, potentially, anyway! The discovery of this particle is exciting for anybody who has even a slight curiosity in gaining knowledge of the universe, I think :) Nerdgasm! It ain't called the 'God' particle for nothin'!!!

You heard the Boson drinking game?

Any time you read or hear the term god particle in relation to it, you need to take a drink.

I haven't heard of that, but I don't drink anyways :P And I know it's not a well-liked term in the scientific community >< But I felt naughty, so I went for it!

It is really not a well liked term in the scientific community. Generally they do their best to steer clear of trying to replace god with science. It's not really a verified discovery yet anyway. They've only reached a sigma 4.9 level of certainty when a sigma 5 level is required to be considered proven. Symantecs maybe, but guidelines are in place for a reason and there is a one in 35 million chance that they are wrong!

Which source are you using, every source I've read, both from CERN and the news states clearly, that it's Sigma 5 certainty.

Apparently the CMS team had it within 4.9 sigma and the ATLAS team had it at 5 sigma.

But yeah. Exciting times.

Or alternatively is it the Higgs Boson that created God?

Yes, I have been following on that and am quite excited and eager to see what religious, in particular, has to say about this.

It is cool. I'm definitely interested in the future discoveries this may bring.

Would be awesome to be a scientist right now. Poppin' bottles, I bet.
