Hello! Fancy seeing me here!

This new little poem sprang from my head, bursting, irrepressible, like a geyser. Born from some form of searing despair that I will never be able to top the work of the Romantic poets no matter what iambs I imagine or trochees that tumble forth from the top of me ‘ead. I make a whole lot of references to Romantic poets (and some who aren’t) and their works. Look out for mega Byron-tastic ending, Keats’ grave epithet, and an admirable use of the word ‘lucubrate’!

It’s called Romanticism is Dead. This is one for the poetry nerds among us, those of us who engulf ourselves in poetry. Like the pretentious bastards we are. Here you go, then, you gorgeous reprobates.

Romanticism

I wish I could write something of a cloudless clime - uniquely profound
Though all that’s best of Shakespearian thoughts are already abound.
In my head I have nothing with which to suck the honey of thy breath
And I think ‘Heaven in a wildflower’ Romanticism has been done to death…

But there’s a drowsy numbness when my brain and fingers cannot abridge
My whispering tongue won’t ever poison the truth of Sam Coleridge
Nor risk your tears upon paper and leave my poetry defiled
In the absence of the passion of Shelley or the vigour of Wilde

Like when Chatterton said he could feel those lusty, looming shadows
Those with which insight in me, like he, such reverential, fearful glows
I ache to tell you, as he did so, what gets me in this sodden state
I entangle myself in thoughts of you to even attempt to try and lucubrate

I couldn’t write you like Byron or Keats - lay my heart out for the slaughter
Write anything as well as he, in death, whose name is writ in water
I would, if I could, make a pageant for all those bloody hearted dears
Then grow cold as thy kiss
When we two part in silence and tears

Thank you to both of you! Your words feel like a wonderful embrace! Though I think the second line is slightly laboured, If I could change it on here, I would. I have changed it on my first draft, though!

Anyway, thanks for such kind words!
