When Violet was satisfied Rat was fine, she went over to help the mothers soothe their children. "It's okay," she said, smoothing the hair of one of the motherless girls, named Gina, who was about three. "It's okay sweetie. How about I take you guys in and read y'all a bedtime story?" She asked the small group of orphans. They all nodded their little tear-streaked faces and Violet led the way to the tent they all slept in. Jonny, a little boy around eight, walked over to the small stack of books beside the tents entrance and picked up a thin, worn book that had probably been in the POM for over thirty years. "Can you read the Ug...ly Duck...ling to us?" he begged her, struggling to read the title. The other kids nodded their heads enthusiastically. "Of course!" she told them and took the book from Jonny. "It was lovely summer weather in the country, the green oats, and the haystacks..." she began.

She ducked into the tent, the children completely captivated by her compelling voice and not even noticing her entrance, and sat down among the youngsters.
Violet noticed, voice halting. Then smiled a brilliant smile that reached her hazel eyes.
"Didnt mean to interrupt...do you mind if I join you all?"

Smiling, Violet said "Of course not! I think there is some room over there between Alison and Derek," pointing to the left side of the tent. Violet started reading again. "“Let him alone,” said the mother; “he is not doing any harm.” “Yes, but he is so big and ugly,” said the spiteful duck “and therefore he must be turned out.” “The others are very pretty children,” said the old duck, with the rag on her leg, “all but that one; I wish his mother could improve him a little.” “That is impossible, your grace,” replied the mother; “he is not pretty; but he has a very good disposition, and swims as well or even better than the others. I think he will grow up pretty, and perhaps be smaller; he has remained too long in the egg, and therefore his figure is not properly formed;” and then she stroked his neck and smoothed the feathers, saying, “It is a drake, and therefore not of so much consequence. I think he will grow up strong, and be able to take care of himself..."

Soon she became just like the children: sometime Alison had climbed into her lap and was completely relaxed, Derek leaned his small head of messy brown curls of Bella's shoulder, and her own eyelids were beginning to become heavy. Then closed altogether.

"...hid his head under his wing; for he did not know what to do, he was so happy, and yet not at all proud. He had been persecuted and despised for his ugliness, and now he heard them say he was the most beautiful of all the birds. Even the elder-tree bent down its bows into the water before him, and the sun shone warm and bright. Then he rustled his feathers, curved his slender neck, and cried joyfully, from the depths of his heart, “I never dreamed of such happiness as this, while I was an ugly duckling." The End" Violet finished the story. All the children, and even Bella, had fallen asleep. Violet got up and started covering up everyone and laying those who had fallen asleep sitting up, down. When she was done, Violet smiled to herself and stepped out into the chilly air to head to her own tent.

"Here you go." Nathan offered Rat a cigarette and rubbed his eyes. He couldn't really sleep now for some reason. He took another drag of the cigarette and exhaled, sighing. Apparently, that Jack person had been hurt. Now that he there was calm around the camp again, he didn't think it was too serious. Nathan had never really spoken to the guy, but he always kept to himself. And that was fine with Nathan. "Does anyone know if there's a tent with room for another?" He said, mostly to himself.

"I think we have room in the one I'm staying in. My parents and a few other families are in there, so it's a tight fit, but there's room. I could grab you a spare blanket and pillow. I, myself, am sleeping under the stars tonight. It's too pretty to waste, so you can have my spot, if you want," Violet said, looking up at the clear night sky. "I'm heading that way now. Goodnight, Rat," Violet said as she walked away.

Shy ducked in a prickly shrub by the dim lights and noices surrounding a camper van. She could hear someone mumbling in a tune, singing, perhaps? She saw little point in something that wasted so much time. As a child, and a teenager, Shy spent most of her life without the need for music, however whenever she was stealing a piece of clothing from a store she often heard some catchy lyrical nosense playing from speakers in the roof. It's not that she didn't enjoy music, but singing? No way! Shaking this off her mind, she played closer attention to the scene around her. She coud defintely see someone by a camp fire, singing away. She smelt the warm smell of cooking meat. Her mouth watered. She quickly glided up a tree trunk and into the branches. She picked an acorn from one of the branches and through it about 10 metres away from where the person sat causing them to jump and observe where the noise had come from. As the person began to walk to where the acorn had landed Shy leapt from the tree and took some of the meat from the flame. Although it was still hot, it tasted amazing. Something caught her eyes, a small purse. What could be in it? Jewellery? Money? Whatever it was, she knew she wanted it.

Rat took a long drag from the cigarette and sighed as she breathed out slowly. She heard Violet saying something about there being a little room in her parents tent and then she looked at Nathan then back at Violet as she walked away. "I don't think that will be enough room..." She muttered to herself then quickly looked up at Nathan who was looking at her oddly. "Not that you are that big of a guy... I mean your not small but... AHH!" She took a hard drag and turned around quickly but before she headed for her tent she looked back and said, "It's just me in my tent, its a lot of room. If you wanted." with that she started walking towards her tent.

Rat rolled her eyes, "Do you want a place to sleep or not?" She said shrugging. In truth she just didn't know what to say, she always had trouble talking to boys.
When they got to her tent she pulled a few extra blankets out of her pack and gave them to Nathan, then went and sat on her blankets and watched him put together his. She had never really talked to him until now and didn't know much about him, "Where did you come from?" She suddenly asked out of no where.

Rat laid back and looked over at Nathan, "Why are you here?" She asked and took one last drag from her cigarette. She heard something come from outside but it was probably just an animal, she shook it off quickly.

Violet grabbed her things from her tent and took them to where they had all eaten and danced just hours ago. It's funny how fear and panic can stretch time because dinner seemed like ages ago. Violet set out her things, got into bed and quickly fell asleep to the soothing sounds of the outdoors.

She grinned; she was as bad as the kids, falling asleep to a bedtime story!
Bella kissed Alison's sleeping head and disentangle herself from Derek. Violet must have covered her up, and Bella was grateful. Stretching, she tiptoed out of the tent in search of Violet to thank her.

Violet didn't know if it was the sunlight or the smell of ripe fruit that woke her up, but either way she was happy to get up and help. She walked over to one of the mothers dicing up apples for breakfast and asked if she could help. Violet was assigned to the strawberries. She had to wash them, slice them and then put them into a wooden bowl for the fruit salad they were having. When she was done with the strawberries and saw no other things she could help the breakfast ladies with, she went to find Aden. Aden was her godmother's eight month old baby boy. He was cute as a button with his chubby little limbs and rosy cheeks, and his bright green eyes and fluffy blonde hair did nothing but make him even more precious. Aden cooed "'Let! 'Let!," when he saw Violet. He began squirming and grumbling in his mother's arms, trying to get to Violet. Violet scooped him up and spun him around making the baby scream with pure glee as the world spun around them. Violet threw him up and caught him, issuing another round of giggles. Then Violet began to tickle the infants belly, instigating more whoops of merriment. A child's laughter is a beautiful sound, Violet thought as Aden's happy shrieks filled the small clearing, bringing smile's to most everyone's faces.

"Thank you so much, Bella! I just never seem to have enough hands!" She exclaimed.
"Call me whenever you need me, I'll always help," she offered.
"You don't know how much I will appreci- my my, I do believe you have a shadow," Jessica mused as her 5 year old spilt her drink. Bella spun to see what she could mean as Jessica fused over her young one.
Little Derek was peeking out from behind a tree, face sleepy yet excited. His head quickly disappeared when Bella saw him. Her lips curved. 'Lets see how far he goes with this.' She thought.
Then followed the laughter, knowing it would lead her to Violet.

"Hi Bella!" Violet laughed, as she saw Bella coming her way. "Shhhh, Aden," Violet giggled when Aden let out another hoot. "Imma get you if you keep being loud," Violet challenged the baby. As if in defiance, Aden opened his mouth and began to scream "'Let! 'Let!" "Alrighty, mister," Violet said to him, "you asked for it!" Violet started pretending to eat the baby's neck, earning more riotous laughter from him.

"Do ya'll want some breakfast?" Bella inquired.
